When Technology Passes Wisdom

All that surrounds us and by which
we will be judged-
these incomplete circles,
perforated diaphrams,
gnawed shields, unfinished arrows-
will be taken as signs

pointing toward an iron self,
or else toward the scrapyard
to which we seem to be rolling-

great studded wheels grinding
over the pavement,
leaving behind us crushed glass,
pieces of flattened tin.
