Our Turn Again

For a long time now
we have heard these voices
singing along eroded wires,
murmurs from the veiled partitions
of clouds, little whispers
tracing the dustů

They tell us what we partly know,
hidden by the noise we make:
the land will not forgive us.

Everything we have known for so long,
a house at ease, a calm street
to walk on, and a sunset
in which the fire means us no harm.

Rolling back from the blocked summit
like an uncoupled train
with no hand on the brake,
gathering speed in the dark
on the mountain grade.
