Devil's Caretaker

The night people called to the shadows
and the shadows awoke-
came down from the rafter clearings

in the light that came at sundown,
slowly basking,
from the fires at earths end.

The night people spoke in whispers
or with the cries of storm driven birds
-wings in the darkness overhead
bearing homeward the souls of the dead.

And the dead were awake, upright
and listening,
in the tread of the striding wind.
